Steel Talk - Restart of Electric-Weld Pipe Mill Update

Deep Dive Into Lone Star Mills' Capability & Capacity

Posted by Tubular Marketing on Apr 24, 2019 1:45:00 PM

The restart process for Lone Star Tubular Operations No. 1 mill is moving along nicely, and we thought we would share a bit more detail on what it is capable of producing starting the third quarter of 2019. Additionally, find details below on the capabilities of our fully operational No. 2 mill.

The No. 1 mill is capable of producing up to 400,000 net tons of tubular products annually, slightly higher than its adjacent No. 2 mill at 390,000 net tons per annum.  Unlike its neighbor, which produces pipe with outside diameter (OD) ranging from 2-3/8" to 7", the No. 1 mill manufactures pipe ranging from 7" to 16" in OD.  These pipe sizes are widely used for hydrocarbon exploration and production, energy transmission pipelines, and many other applications.  Below is a handy chart that outlines the comparison between the two mills:

Lone Star Mills Capability & Annual Capacity

As U. S. Steel's premier electric resistance welded pipe manufacturing facility, both mills are equipped with full-body normalizing furnaces, which heats the pipe to its upper critical temperature and generates an uniformed grain structure throughout the entire pipe wall.  The result is pipe with consistent hardness and durability throughout, and any potential weak spots with residual stress eliminated.

In addition to producing quality welded pipe, Lone Star offers a variety of finishing services such as quench and temper, threading, and non-destructive testings.  These value-added services are performed on-site, saving customers valuable time and money.  The finished pipe can then be loaded and shipped out by truck or rail within the facility.
