As summer is officially here in Fairfield, Alabama, the work around the electric arc furnace is heating up. Here is a look from a time lapse camera that we deployed recently to capture the construction progress at the melt shop.
The first week of June has been full of activities at the EAF construction site. At the melt shop, the crew continues their work on setting parts for the tilt platform, while performing additional iron work at the south end. The cranes at the nearby caster bay have also been removed in preparation to start excavation work for the vacuum tank degasser.

Earlier this week, workers finished installing all of the roof trusses for the melt shop. With the building frame nearly complete, exterior panels will begin making their way on the perimeter of the building.

Following up with the 30" cooling water pipe work from last week, we are nearly done on the underground portion of this task with all the pipe laid and ready for validation.

An important aspect to a safe and productive electric arc furnace is having a proper cooling system in place. This week, trenches are being dug by excavators to prepare for the installation of underground cooling water pipe. These 30-inch conduits will channel water to various parts of the operation to prevent overheating and malfunctions.

Several important pieces of construction equipment were assembled and are in operations this week. One of largest and most impressive machinery is the crawler crane. The city of Hoover announced earlier today that its Hoover Industrial Development Board (HIDB) will issue $275 million in bonds to support our electric arc furnace project in Fairfield, Alabama. This signifies an important commitment for both HIDB and U. S. Steel to continue to boost economic development and job creation in the region.
